Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis, & Omaha Ry., Class "M-1" 0-6-0 #18

Taken Spooner, Wis. circa 1952.

During the time that I was paying attention to such things, (1942 to the end of steam) , I never saw an M-1 class switcher in operation at Spooner. #18 appeared late in the game and was probably on its way to the scrap yard. The main and eccentric rods have been removed to eliminate a lot of friction in moving pistons and valves while the engine was being deadheaded. Note also that the front cylinder head is missing. The main difference between the M-1's and later switchers is that the M-1's had a long narrow between the drivers firebox while the later ones all had wide, above the drivers fireboxes. Note that the early Baker valve gear has the combination lever attached directly to the bell crank with the union link extending forward to the cross head rather than having it attached to the valve rod as in later practice. (The difference probably shows up best on 2-8-2 #409.)
